Vegetables below, solar panels above. The future of agriculture is fueling sunlight. If solar modules were to hang over just four percent of the agricultural land in Germany, Germany’s entire electricity demand could be covered, experts say. How far have we come along this path?

Word is spreading more and more that agricultural photovoltaics helps to defuse the competition for land between agricultural use and energy production and at the same time strengthens farmers’ income security. This is a key aspect, not least in regions with high demand for land, strong agricultural use and large production potential. Even with relatively poor soil quality, yield losses can be compensated for by solar power.
In Dillingen an der Donau, too, more and more interested people, from young farmers to district farmers, are recognising this dual use of arable land as sensible and sustainable, as the Augsburger Allgemeine reports.
Anke Müller, Head of Communications at AgroSolar Europe, explains in the report that many have also recognised the trend for another reason:
“For farmers, protecting their crops is the most important goal. Many of them have already seen their crops wither for the second or third time because there was too much sun and too little water in the summer. That’s why the shading provided by an Agri PV system is the most important argument for many of our customers, they are looking for a protective function for their crops.”

Haastert describes the enormous potential of Agri-PV as follows: “I believe that Agri-PV will be one of the gamechangers in both agriculture and the energy sector and will contribute significantly to a process of change in both sectors in the coming years.”

Issue 30 of the SPIEGEL shows our Agri-PV plant in Lüchow and reports on the advantages of dual use of land and the importance of protection systems in times of climate change. Because with protection systems plants can be protected from extreme weather conditions with periods of heat but also heavy rain.
