Vegetables below, solar panels above. The future of agriculture is fueling sunlight. If solar modules were to hang over just four percent of the agricultural land in Germany, Germany’s entire electricity demand could be covered, experts say. How far have we come along this path?

The Hessische Rundfunk broadcast station has asked us about this.

Word is spreading more and more that agricultural photovoltaics helps to defuse the competition for land between agricultural use and energy production and at the same time strengthens farmers’ income security. This is a key aspect, not least in regions with high demand for land, strong agricultural use and large production potential. Even with relatively poor soil quality, yield losses can be compensated for by solar power.

In Dillingen an der Donau, too, more and more interested people, from young farmers to district farmers, are recognising this dual use of arable land as sensible and sustainable, as the Augsburger Allgemeine reports.

Anke Müller, Head of Communications at AgroSolar Europe, explains in the report that many have also recognised the trend for another reason:

“For farmers, protecting their crops is the most important goal. Many of them have already seen their crops wither for the second or third time because there was too much sun and too little water in the summer. That’s why the shading provided by an Agri PV system is the most important argument for many of our customers, they are looking for a protective function for their crops.”

What makes an agri-PV system profitable, and what are the key success factors in the interaction with agriculture? This is what the agrarzeitung wanted to know from our Managing Director Markus Haastert in the 11.11.22 issue.

Haastert describes the enormous potential of Agri-PV as follows: “I believe that Agri-PV will be one of the gamechangers in both agriculture and the energy sector and will contribute significantly to a process of change in both sectors in the coming years.”

“The combined use of solar power and agriculture enables many synergies. In Germany, the number of implemented projects and providers of novel systems is increasing.”
This is the title of the current special supplement of the magazine top agrar, which gives a good overview of all systems on the market.

The NDR podcast “Mission Klima” accompanied our Managing Director Markus Haastert on a visit to our AgroSolar Top plant in the Wendland region. Why Agri-PV is attractive for farmers, what this summer has changed and what hurdles still exist are the topics of this episode of “Mission Climate”.

Issue 30 of the SPIEGEL shows our Agri-PV plant in Lüchow and reports on the advantages of dual use of land and the importance of protection systems in times of climate change. Because with protection systems plants can be protected from extreme weather conditions with periods of heat but also heavy rain.
„We approach Agri-PV from the agricultural side“, our Managing Director Markus Haastert is quoted as saying. The growing importance of water management in agriculture is also a topic for him and the SPIEGEL.

„When it comes to innovative PV concepts, Germany is lagging behind in the energy transition, as it so often does. Now, however, the BMU has announced funding for an agricultural PV plant on an industrial scale – a first.“ …

Press release of the Federal Environment Ministry, 11.06.2021

„The Federal Environment Ministry is funding an innovative agro-photovoltaic system by the Steinicke company in Lüchow, Lower Saxony, with more than 400,000 euros. With the pilot project, agricultural land is to be used both for food production and, above that, for electricity generation through photovoltaics.“ …

„At the Heggelbach organic farm on Lake Constance, they want to find out whether farming can function under a photovoltaic system. The pilot project with the PV systems is being scientifically accompanied by the Fraunhofer Institute in Freiburg. Can solar power from the field help to find new areas for renewable energies?“ …

Bayrischer Rundfunk, 19.05.2020

„Every day in Germany, 61 hectares are released for settlement and transport areas. This corresponds to about 85 football fields. Saving land is therefore a declared goal of the Federal Government – just like the energy transition. So-called agrophotovoltaics could reconcile both.“ …

„Food crops compete with energy crops and solar panels. Fertile farmland is becoming scarce. One way out could be agrophotovoltaics“ …

Telepolis, 29.07.2019

„Partial shading under the solar modules increased agricultural crop yields, and the high solar radiation increased solar power production. Thus, the land use efficiency was 186 percent. “We assume that the plants coped better with the shading under the semi-transparent solar modules,“ Andrea Ehmann.” …
